Artist Statement
Generally speaking, my work is prompted by and concerned with cultural constructions of womanhood and ideals of beauty. I use a variety of mediums, predominately charcoal and graphite drawings and Photoshop manipulations of photography to explore position of a young female in contemporary Western culture.
Most recently, my work has focused on the content of image sharing on social media platforms, specifically, selfies. My primary interest is the selfies young women share and take of themselves. What are the compositions saying about social constructions of femininity and beauty? What can these images reveal about the individuals who indulge in the practice? How do these selfies connect to the evolution of sharing from individual to individual into a public performance?
